ALL-BREED All Sighthound Breeds may participate in this event. See Sighthound.
AGILITY One of the categories for judging. Refers to nimbleness and the ability to move quickly, easily and to recover in turns and falls.
AGGRESSOR The hound instigating a confrontation or fight either fieldside or during a course in progress.

APPRENTICE The first level for an individual seeking license to judge.
APPROACH THE LINE An instruction by the Huntmaster to the handlers awaiting start of the course.
ASFA American Sighthound Field Association.
ASSIGNMENT A position to which an individual is given responsibility.
AWARDS A ribbon, trophy or rosette given for a placement.

BATTERY An item to provide power for the lure machine
BATTERY CHARGER An optional equipment for maintenance of power.
BEST OF BREED The top placement within a breed.
BEST IN FIELD An optional competition between all Best-Of-Breed winners. The top placement of all hounds during a BIF run-off. Trios of mixed breeds run, if possible.
BIF See Best In Field. All Best of Breed winners run-off for this placement. Additional points may be awarded by AKC.
BLANKET An identifier in Yellow, Pink or Blue worn by a hound during its course.
BLANKET SWITCH An incident wherein a handler may have suited a hound incorrectly and it was not caught in Paddock or by Huntmaster; or, where a judge inadvertently confuses one color for another when marking the score sheet.
THE BOARD Understood to be the decision-making body of either National organization.
BREED DISQUALIFICATION Trial officials must abide by all AKC breed standards and disqualifications.
BREEDER STAKE If listed in the Premium List, this stake is open to any STAKE breed which has two or more hounds bred by the same individual, regardless of ownership.

CCN# Critique Case Number is given by the Saluki Club of America. These hounds may also have a Foreign Registry Number.
CHAMPION A hound who has completed the point and placement requirements for the title (Also, Field Champion).
COLLAR, SLIP A simplified, quick-release lead which gives almost instantaneous freedom at the "Tally-Ho".
COLLAR, WALKING This is a "no-no" at the Paddock and Line.
COLORS See Blanket. These are vivid colors of Yellow, Pink and/or Blue.
CONDITIONING A necessary pre-Trial work program to build up endurance and physical stamina.
CONTINUOUS LOOP A type of wheel used wherein the line does not have an open end.
COOL DOWN A time period for walking out a hound following completion of a course.
COOL DOWN BLANKET A covering for the hound, generally made of toweling, which can be soaked in cool water for cooling in hot weather.
COURSE Consists of 1, 2 or 3 hounds of a single breed participating in following the lure over a selected course. A course begins after the handlers' affirmative response to "Are you ready?" from the Huntmaster and ends when all hounds in the course are under the handlers' physical control.
COURSE DELAY PENALTY A delay may be called when a handler is unable to retrieve the hound after the Huntmaster's command "Retrieve your hounds", or by a break-away hound not returned quickly to the line before "Are you ready?" or a handler delaying the course by not approaching the line quickly at the command "Approach the line". Generally considered to be from 3 to 5 minutes. Each judge may assess from 1 to 5 (AKC) or 1 to 10 (ASFA) points for any hound or handler delaying the start of a course.
COURSED OTHER HOUND A hound who follows another around the course rather than following the lure.
COURSE PLAN That diagram inserted in the Premium List which indicates the layout for the day of the Test or Trial.
CREW Applies to all personnel responsible for field activity.
CROSS-OVER Where the lure and line crosses over the line at one or two (max.) places in a course plan.
CUTTING A term used when a hound cuts a corner and runs off the line.
