| LAME
|
A hound determined
at time of inspection to be unfit to compete due
to a limp or injury. No refund is made to the
handler unless the hound is called in lame prior
to closing date/number. |
| LATE
ENTRY |
An entry received
past the date or numerical deadline. It is to be
returned as unacceptable. A courtesy telephone
notification to the handler/ owner may be in
order. |
| LCM |
Lure Courser of
Merit. Indicates that a hound has completed a
Field Championship and has earned an additional
300 points and four first placements. Further
competition for LCM-II, LCM-III, etc., is
encouraged. |
| LICENSED
|
This indicates
that a Judge has progressed from Apprentice to
Provisional to Licensed status. Some Judges may
only be Provisional and are designated by an *
beside the breed(s) to be judged. (ASFA) |
| LOOSE
DOG |
Any hound
accidentally released who is not part of a course
in progress. There is usually a field fine of
$5.00 per incident. |
| LURE
|
A distinctive
piece of white plastic, large enough for easy
recognition, which is attached to the line and is
drawn around the course in front of the hounds as
a running teaser. |
| LURE
MACHINE |
The equipment used
to operate the lure and line. It consists of a
motor, starter button and hold- down stakes. This
may be purchased ready-made or information is
available for do-it-yourselfers. |
| LURE
OPERATOR (L/O) |
This person is
responsible for equipment maintenance, lay-out of
the diagramed course, operation of the lure for
the hounds in a safe, hazard-free method, and
re-packing the gear after the event. Usually with
years of experience. |

| MAJOR(S),
AKC |
Where a given
number of hounds compete in the Open Stake as
determined by the overall annual participation.
Two are required under different judges at
separate events. See current Regulations for Lure
Coursing Tests and Trials for the current point
schedule. |
| MASTER
COURSER |
A suffix
designation indicating that a hound has competed
and qualified in 25 Lure Trials. This hound need
not be a Field Champion. |
| MISCELLANEOUS
CLASS |
ASFA
recently (2000) formed a separate class for
provisionally approved hounds. This class is
separated into two height categories, Large--Over
18.5" and Small--Under 18.5". |

Next Best
Qualified (ASFA), same as Fifth Place in AKC. |
NGA#
(NATIONAL GREYHOUND ASSN.) |
Numbers are
tattooed in the ears of racing greyhounds. Family
adoption of retired NGA hounds allows them to
still course. |
| NATURAL
TERRAIN |
This is a broad
description given to the land used for the
Test/Trial. Some further description may be
given, i.e., stubble, scrub growth, trees. |
| NO
COURSE |
At Judges' option,
a course which has been unjudgable may be called
a No-Course. In which case, all hounds not
excused, dismissed or disqualified will be re-run
at a convenient time following a short rest
period. |
| NOVICE
STAKE |
This stake is
permitted at Fun Trials only. A hound runs alone
and Judges score as usual with placements based
on the combined Preliminary and Final tallies. |

| OVERALL
ABILITY |
One of the
categories for judging in AKC Lure Trials. Refers
to the general performance of the hound. |
| OVER-RUN
|
Where a hound has
passed over the lure due to the slowness of the
equipment or due to the hound cutting across the
course. |

| PADDOCK |
The
main holding area for hounds due up next. |
| PADDOCK
MASTER |
The crew member
responsible for the expeditious preparation of
hounds according to the Paddock sheet which lists
Call Name, Color and Course. |
| PARKING |
Some events
require separate instructions on this. |
| PER
CAPITA |
The fee paid to
the National organization for each hound
competing . |
| PILOT
DOG |
This unentered dog
runs the set course for judges, lure operator,
huntmaster and crew to evaluate the safety and
continuity of the course as designed. (Also
called Bye Dog or Test Dog.) |
| PLACEMENT
|
The level of
achievement for the day's Trial. An award, trophy
or rosette may be given. Placements are First,
Second, Third, Fourth, AKC=Fifth/ ASFA=Next Best
Qualified |
| POINTS,
AKC |
Points are based
on the number of hounds defeated according to a
changing (generally annually) scale. (See Rules
and Regulations for current point schedule.) To
attain Field Champion, a hound must earn 15
points with two majors.
