Our History & Philosophy:
SUNSTAG (Reg.) is a small, selective kennel that has been actively exhibiting worldwide for over 40 years. We registered our name with the American Kennel Club and the Canadian Kennel Club because we take great pride in our reputation and lifelong commitment to this breed.
Our goal has always been to produce sound, typey, functional hounds of great size and substance — with the requisite power and symmetry described in our breed’s Standard. In recent years, we have returned to the foundational breeding principles taught to us by our mentors — principles that helped revitalize and strengthen the breed.
We began breeding in the late 1970s, when we located a pair of hounds that met our strict criteria. From that beginning, we believe we have met — and often exceeded — our own expectations.
Our Puppy Families:
SUNSTAG (Reg.) strives to create lasting relationships with our puppy families. We consider ourselves benevolent in-laws: always available to answer questions (real or imagined), offer reassurance, laugh over puppy antics, and help you find reliable resources as you learn more about this remarkable breed. Once you are owned by an Irish Wolfhound, you are family.
We encourage thoughtful decisions. Visit our home kennel. Meet our hounds. Research breeders in your area. We are happy to provide references so you feel confident and comfortable with your choice.
Each family receives a comprehensive New Puppy Guide to help make your puppy’s transition smooth and joyful.
Raising & Placement:
Puppies remain with their dam through the completion of their early developmental “fight-or-flight” stage (approximately 10 weeks), allowing the mother to disengage naturally before the puppies move to our full care and then to their new homes.
We do not permit neutering before 14 months of age and strongly prefer waiting until two years. This recommendation reflects our long experience and medical considerations, rather than the current trend toward very early spay/neuter.
Show Potential & Temperament:
Not every puppy in every litter is suited for the show ring. A show career can be stressful for a hound without the temperament or desire for that environment. Our priority is longevity, stability, and joy — because while we may joke that we want them to live forever, what we truly want is for them to live long, healthy lives with you.
